The future of the automobile is electric, and Volvo is leading the way. For several years now, Volvo has offered highly efficient hybrid options across its lineup. I started in 2013 with the V60 PHEV wagon and eventually evolved into the T8 plug-in hybrid available on models like the S60, S90, XC60, and XC90. Besides offering excellent fuel economy, the T8 powertrain boasts prodigious power output, with a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter engine and an electric motor combining to generate 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. For the 2021 model year, the T8 plug-in hybrid has been renamed "Recharge" across most of the lineup. But for the XC40, Volvo has something even more exciting.

Immense Power, Emissions-Free

Arriving late-2020/early-2021, Volvo is set to launch its first-ever fully electric production model, the XC40 Recharge P8. The XC40 Recharge features a 75 kW battery pack powering two electric motors, one for each axle, which send a combined 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque to the all-wheel-drive system. Smaller dimensions give Recharge an outstanding power-to-weight ratio, and Volvo asserts that it can reach 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.7 seconds.

The XC40 Recharge offers a Volvo-estimated range of more than 200 miles on a single charge. And with a 150-kW DC fast charger, the battery can be charged to 80 percent in just 40 minutes.

Like all Volvo models, the Recharge P8 will offer premium accommodations, versatile cargo capacity, and a wealth of amenities, including advanced smartphone integration and IntelliSafe driver-assistance technologies.
